Christoph Wyttenbach and Ueli Käser
Their work thrives on this contrast and, at the same time, on a clear shared vision. That is precisely what makes their work so special.

Ueli Käser
Ueli is a master of detail and paints exclusively in white on a black background, using just one brush size. His animal portraits are not only lifelike, but seem to leap right out of the picture. Each work is a tribute to the fascinating animal kingdom and the natural beauty of our world.

The Mammoth is a collaborative work by the artists Ueli Käser and Christoph Wyttenbach. The sculpture was created over the course of a year. During this time, countless hours were invested in planning, collecting and construction until the work reached its current size.
The sculpture is made entirely from driftwood. The wood comes from Swiss rivers and lakes and was collected with the permission of the relevant authorities. Every single piece was carefully selected and fitted into the shape of the animal like a jigsaw piece, then screwed into place. Step by step, a powerful yet natural structure took shape.
Particular attention was paid to the proportions. The artists’ aim was to recreate the appearance of a real mammoth as realistically as possible, whilst allowing the original form of the wood to remain visible.
The idea for the project arose by chance during a conversation between Ueli Käser and Christoph Wyttenbach. What began as a rather light-hearted notion quickly took on a life of its own. Shortly afterwards, the two set about collecting the first pieces of driftwood and beginning the construction.
From the remnants of nature, smoothed by our streams, their hands create a reminder of a lost world: an animal that has been extinct for over 10,000 years.
Every piece of wood carries its own story. Shaped by water, time and nature, this sculpture combines the power of the landscape with precision craftsmanship and artistic imagination.
The artwork will be on display at Kunsthalle Langenthal from 1 May to 5 June 2026.

Over a year ago, Christoph Wyttenbach and Ueli Käser came up with the idea of creating a work together.
It soon became clear that it was to be a Valais Blacknose sheep. Carved from wood using a chainsaw.
In May 2025, we primed the sculpture together with black paint. It was then taken to Ueli’s studio and painted over the summer. And all this using just one brush size.
In October 2025, the work was completed in time to be presented to the general public at the Olma in St. Gallen.
The artwork will be on display at Kunsthalle Langenthal from 1 May to 5 June 2026.
